Security Cameras Installation

Cameras are the most commonly bought and least commonly used part of a security system. Many premises that have them have never reviewed a recording, and many that needed one found the footage unusable — a silhouette against a bright doorway, a figure too small to identify, a drive that had overwritten the day in question. The equipment was fine; the design was not. This page is about the decisions that make a camera system useful, while our page on camera installation for commercial properties covers specification for larger sites.

What Cameras Actually Do

A camera does three jobs, and they pull in different directions. Deterrence: a visible dome changes some behaviour, mostly opportunistic, whether or not anyone watches. Live monitoring: someone watching, or alerts a person responds to. Evidence after the fact: where nearly all the value sits, depending on image quality, retention and being able to find the clip you need.

Those aims conflict. A camera mounted high for deterrence is often too high to capture a face, and the wide view of a whole car park is not the view that identifies a person. Good designs use different cameras for different jobs, and the first question is not “how many cameras” but “what do I need to prove.”

What cameras do not do is worth saying plainly. They do not stop a determined intruder, they do not lock anything, and they do not replace a solid door, a proper strike or controlled keys. They record. Where physical security is weak, cameras produce a good recording of a burglary rather than preventing one — the other half our commercial locksmith work addresses.

Where Footage Fails

When a system disappoints, the cause is usually on a short list:

  • Aimed at a doorway rather than at faces. A camera looking down on an entrance sees the top of a head and a pair of shoulders. One near head height, inside, looking back at people as they come through, sees a face. The second identifies someone; the first confirms a person existed.
  • Backlit entrances. Point a camera at a glass storefront in daylight and the sensor exposes for the sky behind the subject, producing a silhouette. Wide dynamic range helps; not shooting into the light helps more.
  • Fields of view stretched too wide. Pixels are finite. Spread them across a whole yard and a face occupies a handful. Wide views tell you what happened; narrow views tell you who did it. You need both, and they are different cameras.
  • No usable light. Infrared has limited range and washes out reflective surfaces. Adding light to the scene is often cheaper and better than adding camera.
  • Recordings that no longer exist. A break-in discovered on Monday may have happened on Friday. If the recorder holds only a short window, or the drive failed and nobody noticed, there is nothing to review.
  • Nobody knowing how to retrieve a clip. Footage that cannot be exported for a police officer or an insurer is close to no footage at all.

Resolution, Frame Rate and Lenses in Plain Terms

Resolution is the number of pixels in the image, but what matters is pixels on the subject. A high-resolution camera covering a wide area easily delivers fewer pixels on a face than a modest camera on a doorway, so when someone quotes a resolution, ask what field of view goes with it; the two only mean something together.

Frame rate is images captured per second. Higher rates smooth motion and matter where things move quickly — a vehicle lane, a till. Elsewhere a moderate rate is fine and uses less storage. Setting every camera to maximum resolution and frame rate is the usual way to exhaust capacity while gaining nothing anyone would look at.

Lens choice sets the trade: a wide lens covers a room and identifies nobody in it; a narrow lens covers a doorway and identifies everyone through it. Varifocal lenses can be adjusted at commissioning, which matters because the view planned on paper is rarely the view the building allows.

IP, Analogue and Cabling

Modern systems are overwhelmingly IP: each camera is a network device sending digital video over a data cable and drawing power from that same cable through Power over Ethernet. One cable per camera makes installation cleaner and lets a camera be replaced or moved without new wiring. Runs are limited in length, and longer distances need a switch, an extender or fibre — worth establishing early, since it decides where the recorder lives.

Analogue is not dead. High-definition analogue formats send good images over the coaxial cable older buildings already have, a sensible upgrade path when that cabling is sound and pulling new runs through a finished ceiling is the expensive part. The picture is respectable, the flexibility lower; for a new installation, IP is the default.

Cabling determines reliability far more than the camera brand does: hurried connectors, indoor cable run outdoors and unsupported spans are what technicians find when cameras keep dropping off.

Recorders, Cloud and Retention

Recorded video lives somewhere: a local recorder, cloud storage, or both. A recorder on site keeps everything in the building and has no ongoing fee, but a thief who finds it takes the evidence with him — an argument for locking it away rather than leaving it on a counter. Cloud recording moves footage off site so it survives the premises and can be reviewed from elsewhere, though it depends on upload bandwidth and comes with a subscription. Hybrid systems record locally and push events to the cloud, a reasonable compromise for most small sites.

Retention is the decision people skip. Storage is finite, so a recorder keeps a rolling window and overwrites the oldest footage. How long that window runs depends on camera count, resolution, frame rate and whether recording is continuous or motion-triggered. Decide how far back you may need to look — after a holiday weekend, an audit, a complaint that surfaces late — and specify storage to reach it rather than accepting the default. Motion-triggered recording stretches retention, at the cost of the seconds before the trigger unless pre-event buffering is enabled.

Outdoors in South Florida

The climate here is hard on outdoor equipment, and it fails in the same places every time. Salt-laden air corrodes housings, screws and brackets, especially near the coast. Moisture finds connectors that were not properly sealed and cable entries left facing upward. Sun degrades cheap plastic domes until the image goes hazy, and heat inside an enclosure shortens the life of everything in it. Storm season adds wind loading a light bracket will not survive.

The response is specification rather than optimism: housings with a proper environmental rating, stainless or coated fixings, sealed connectors, cable entries dressed with a drip loop, and mounting to solid structure rather than soffit board. Shade helps the electronics and the image. Indoors none of this applies and a simpler camera does the job — which is why an indoor camera fitted under an eave “because it is covered” fails within a season or two.

Low light deserves its own thought. Built-in infrared works over a limited distance and reflects badly off nearby walls, glass and rain. Over a large area, ambient lighting produces better images and doubles as deterrence. Cameras that hold colour at low light are worth the difference where a description matters, since infrared images are monochrome and clothing colour is often what identifies someone.

Car Parks, Docks and Multi-Tenant Buildings

Open areas need a plan, not a ring of cameras pointed vaguely outward. Car parks work best when the entry and exit lanes are the identification points, with cameras low enough to read plates and see drivers, and wider views over the bays for context. Plate capture is its own job, needing a dedicated camera, tight framing and attention to headlight glare at night.

Loading docks and rear service doors are where inventory leaves and where staff and contractors mix. Coverage should show the door, the vehicle and the space between, since the useful footage is almost always of what crossed that gap. Perimeter coverage along fences and alleys is context rather than identification, and works best with lighting.

Multi-tenant buildings raise a question that is not technical: who owns the footage. In an office building or a residential association, cameras in lobbies, garages and common areas are normally the association’s system, and access to recordings sits with management under a written policy rather than with whichever tenant asks; tenants may run cameras inside their own premises. Agreeing in advance who may view footage, who may release it, and how requests are handled prevents an argument at the worst time.

Privacy sets real limits. Cameras must not cover bathrooms, changing areas or anywhere a person reasonably expects privacy, and pointing one into a neighbouring property or a unit’s interior invites problems. Coverage of staff break areas deserves care, and audio recording carries its own legal weight in Florida, so it is often better switched off. Signage that recording takes place is good practice.

Tying Cameras to Doors, and Keeping It Working

Cameras and access control are far more useful joined than separate. When a credential is presented the system records a door event, and a camera tied to that door turns the event into a bookmark in the video: instead of scrubbing through hours you jump to the moment a card was used. It also exposes the badge that opened the door for one person while several walked in behind. The same applies to monitoring: a door position switch reporting a propped door can call up the camera view, and a forced-open alarm arrives with a picture. Finally, the unglamorous part. A camera system is not an appliance you fit and forget. Domes accumulate dust, salt film and cobwebs, and a hazy dome degrades every image. Infrared illuminators dim with age, hard drives fail without announcing it, and views drift when a bracket is knocked or a tree grows into frame. The maintenance that keeps a system honest is short and worth diarising:

  • Clean domes and lenses, and clear webs from across illuminators.
  • Confirm every camera is present on the recorder, not just that live view loads.
  • Check that recording is genuinely happening and that the oldest footage reaches as far back as intended.
  • Compare each camera’s framing against what it was installed to see.
  • Export a test clip, so someone on site knows how.
  • Verify time and date; footage with a wrong timestamp is hard to rely on.
