This part of the trade is where people get sold the most and told the least. Cameras, keypads, card readers, app-controlled locks, gate operators — all of it gets quoted quickly and explained slowly, if at all. So before any of the systems below, three questions decide whether the money is well spent.
Who needs to get in, and when? Not who has a key today. Who genuinely needs access, at what hours, to which doors. Most systems get oversized because nobody asked.
What happens the day somebody leaves? This is the question mechanical keys answer badly and electronic systems answer well. If removing one person’s access means collecting keys from twelve people, that alone can justify the upgrade.
What happens when the power goes out? In South Florida that is not hypothetical. Every system here has to have a sane answer, and if a salesperson has not raised it, that is worth noticing.
Access control
Card readers, fobs, keypads and app-based entry, tied to a system that records who opened what and when, and lets you remove one person in seconds without touching a single lock. It is the right answer for buildings with staff turnover, multiple tenants, or areas only some people should reach.
It is also the one people most often buy more of than they need. A four-door system does not need the same infrastructure as a forty-door one. Pricing starts from $800 and goes up from there, and beyond that it depends entirely on door count, door condition and what you want the system to remember — which is why it is quoted after somebody walks the building, not over the phone.

Security cameras
Cameras do not prevent much. What they do is settle arguments — about a delivery, a door propped open, a claim, an incident nobody witnessed. That is genuinely valuable, but it is a different job from stopping someone getting in, and the two get sold as though they were the same thing.
The questions that matter are boring and decisive: what is actually in frame, how long is footage kept, and who can retrieve it at 2am. A camera pointed at a bright doorway at night, recording over itself every three days, is an expense rather than an asset.

Gates, operators and welded repairs
A gate is the one piece of security equipment that is simultaneously a lock, a machine and a structure — and it lives outdoors in salt air. When a gate fails it usually fails as metal first and electronics second: a hinge that has dropped, a post that has shifted, a latch no longer meeting its keeper.
That is why this work often means welding rather than swapping a part. And every gate needs a manual release that somebody in the household or the building actually knows how to find, because the night the power goes out is the wrong time to learn.

Smart locks, honestly
Smart locks are excellent for one thing — giving and removing access without handing over metal. Codes for a cleaner, a contractor, a guest, revoked when you like. That is a real improvement over hiding a key.
They are less excellent as security hardware. The bolt and the strike still do the physical work, and a smart lock fitted to a door with a weak strike is a convenient way to open a weak door. Fit the mechanics first, then the electronics.

High security locks
Mechanical, not electronic, and often the better buy. Restricted keyways mean keys cannot be copied at a hardware counter — which quietly solves the problem most businesses actually have, where nobody is certain how many copies exist.
