An automatic door operator is a motorized device that opens and closes a door without manual effort. It’s the mechanism you see on hospital entrances, pharmacy doors, and accessible building entries — the door swings open on its own when someone approaches or presses a push plate.
For buildings that need to meet ADA accessibility requirements, an automatic door operator can be the difference between a compliant entrance and a non-compliant one. But the operator itself doesn’t guarantee compliance. It has to be installed, adjusted, and maintained to specific standards.
When an Automatic Operator Is Required
The ADA Standards for Accessible Design don’t require automatic doors on every entrance. They require that doors in accessible paths be operable with one hand, without tight grasping or twisting, with a maximum opening force of 5 lbf for interior doors.
If a manual door can meet those requirements — lever hardware, low opening force, accessible clear width — an automatic operator isn’t required. But there are doors where manual operation can’t meet the standard: heavy exterior doors with wind load, doors with strong air pressure differentials, doors that are too heavy for the closer to allow 5 lbf opening force. On those doors, an automatic operator is the path to compliance.
ANSI/BHMA A156.10 is the standard for power-operated doors — doors that open automatically for all users. ANSI/BHMA A156.19 is the standard for low-energy power-operated doors — doors that open on actuation (a push plate, a push-and-go motion) but are slower and safer. Most commercial accessibility installations use A156.19 low-energy operators.
Low-Energy Operators (A156.19)
A low-energy door operator opens the door at a controlled speed, holds it open for a set time, then closes it at a controlled speed. The user activates it with a push plate, a card reader, or a motion sensor. The operator doesn’t “throw” the door open — it moves it slowly enough that someone standing in the door path won’t be struck with force.
A156.19 sets requirements for controlled opening time, a maximum kinetic energy that limits the force of the moving door, a minimum hold-open time, and a closing speed that doesn’t exceed the kinetic energy limit.
These requirements exist because a power-operated door that opens too fast or closes too hard is a safety hazard — particularly to people using wheelchairs or walkers who can’t move out of the way quickly.
Push Plates and Actuators
A low-energy operator has to be activated by the user. The most common actuator is a push plate — a large, accessible button mounted on the wall next to the door. ADA requirements for push plates:
- Mounted at a height of 34 to 48 inches (accessible from a wheelchair)
- Operable with one hand, without tight grasping
- Placed within reach of the door approach path
Some installations use motion sensors instead of push plates. A motion sensor detects approach and opens the door automatically. This is more convenient but requires careful placement — the sensor shouldn’t trigger when someone walks past the door without intending to use it.
What Goes Wrong
Opening speed too fast. If the operator isn’t adjusted correctly, the door opens faster than the A156.19 standard allows. This is the most common compliance failure and the most dangerous — a fast-moving power door can injure someone who can’t move out of the way.
Closing speed too fast. The same issue in reverse. A door that slams shut under power can strike someone from behind. The closing speed has to meet the kinetic energy limit, and the door should slow further in the last few degrees before fully closing.
Push plate out of reach. If the push plate is mounted above 48 inches or behind an obstruction, it’s not accessible from a wheelchair. This is a simple installation error but it fails ADA compliance.
Operator fails, door becomes inoperable. A power-operated door that fails should still be operable manually. If the operator seizes and the door can’t be opened by hand, it’s both an accessibility failure and an egress violation. The operator has to have a manual override — either a disconnect that releases the door for manual operation, or a fail-safe clutch that allows the door to swing freely.
Sensor dead zones. If the approach sensor doesn’t detect a person in a wheelchair or a child, the door doesn’t open. Sensor coverage has to be tested with actual users — not just a standing adult walking straight at the door.
Maintenance
Automatic door operators are mechanical devices with motors, gears, and sensors. They need periodic service:
- Check opening and closing speed against A156.19 requirements (with a stopwatch)
- Verify sensor coverage across the full approach path
- Test the manual override (the door should be openable by hand when the operator is off)
- Inspect the mounting — operators vibrate during use and can work loose over time
- Check the push plate height and function
ANSI/BHMA A156.19 requires that power-operated doors be inspected annually by a qualified person. The inspection has to be documented.
