What a Commercial Camera System Does

A commercial security camera system serves three functions: deterrence, documentation, and investigation. The presence of visible cameras deters opportunistic crime. If an incident occurs, recorded footage documents what happened, when, and who was involved. For a property manager or building owner, this documentation is the difference between a resolved incident and an unresolved liability claim.

A camera system is not a substitute for physical security — locks, access control, and lighting. It is a complement. Cameras record what happens. Locks and access control prevent unauthorized entry. A building that relies on cameras alone has observation without prevention. A building that combines both has a layered security posture.

Coverage Planning

Before selecting cameras, the building’s coverage needs must be mapped. A proper coverage plan identifies every point where a camera adds value: main entrances, where the front door, lobby and reception capture everyone entering and exiting; secondary entrances such as side, rear and employee doors, which are the most common unauthorized entry points; emergency exits that should not be used for routine entry, where a camera confirms they are not being propped open; loading docks, where deliveries arrive and inventory moves; parking areas covering lot entrances, pedestrian walkways and vehicle lanes; common areas such as corridors and shared spaces in multi-tenant buildings; and the perimeter, including fence lines and gate access points.

Blind spots are the most common failure in commercial camera installations. A camera covers a specific field of view. Anything outside that field is a blind spot. The coverage plan should overlap fields of view so that no critical area is uncovered.

Camera Types

Three camera types cover most commercial applications.

Dome cameras. Enclosed in a vandal-resistant housing with a tinted dome. The tint conceals which direction the camera is pointing. Common in retail and office settings. Resistant to physical tampering and weather.

Bullet cameras. Cylindrical, wall-mounted, with a visible lens. The visible form factor acts as a deterrent. Common for parking lots, loading docks, and perimeter coverage. Typically weatherproof for outdoor use.

PTZ, or pan-tilt-zoom. Motorized cameras that can be remotely directed. They cover a wider area than fixed cameras and are useful for large parking lots and perimeter monitoring, but they cost more per unit and can only look in one direction at a time.

Resolution matters. A camera that records at 1080p captures general activity but may not provide enough detail to identify a face beyond 15 to 20 feet. For entrances and areas where identification is critical, 4 megapixel or higher resolution is the minimum. At 4MP, facial detail is clear at 25 to 30 feet. At 8MP (4K), identification range extends further.

Infrared illumination is essential for South Florida, where outdoor cameras need to function at night without relying on area lighting. IR LEDs built into the camera provide invisible illumination for night vision. The effective range of built-in IR is typically 30 to 100 feet depending on the camera. For larger areas, separate IR illuminators extend the effective range.

Storage and Retention

Recorded footage must be stored for a specific period. There is no single federal retention requirement for private security camera footage, but industry practice is 30 days minimum. Some jurisdictions and some insurance policies require longer retention — 60 or 90 days — for commercial properties.

Storage is calculated from four variables: the number of cameras, the resolution of each, the frame rate (typically 15 fps for commercial use and 30 fps where high detail is needed), and the compression codec. H.265 is the current standard and uses roughly half the storage of H.264 at equivalent quality.

For a 16-camera system at 4MP, 15 fps, H.265 compression, 30-day retention typically requires 4 to 8 terabytes of storage. This is stored on a network video recorder (NVR) — a dedicated device with hard drives designed for continuous writing. Consumer-grade hard drives are not rated for continuous recording. Surveillance-rated drives such as WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk are engineered for constant write cycles.

Cloud storage is an option for smaller installations but becomes expensive at scale. A hybrid approach — local NVR for primary storage with cloud backup of flagged events — balances cost with redundancy.

Power and Network Infrastructure

Modern IP camera systems use Power over Ethernet (PoE) — a single Ethernet cable carries both data and power to the camera. This simplifies installation because only one cable run is needed per camera. PoE switches or PoE injectors provide the power. NEC Article 725 covers Class 2 and Class 3 power sources, which include PoE.

For outdoor cameras in South Florida, the cable runs must be in conduit — not exposed cable. South Florida’s UV exposure degrades cable jackets within a year, and conduit also protects against physical damage. Underground runs require PVC conduit with sealed penetrations to prevent water intrusion from the high water table.

Network infrastructure matters for system reliability. A 16-camera system at 4MP generates significant network traffic. The network switch must have adequate throughput, and the NVR must be connected to the network via a gigabit connection. Wireless cameras are available but are less reliable than wired connections, particularly in South Florida where thunderstorms and heavy rain can disrupt wireless signals.

Integration with Access Control

A camera system is more valuable when integrated with the access control system. When an access credential is used at a door, the camera system can flag the corresponding footage. This means that instead of searching through hours of footage to find a specific event, the system pulls up the footage associated with that specific card read.

Integration also enables video verification — when a door is forced open or held open, the camera system displays the corresponding camera feed on the security monitor. This allows the person monitoring the system to see what is happening before responding.

For full integration, both systems — cameras and access control — should be specified together. Retrofitting integration after both systems are installed is possible but depends on protocol compatibility between manufacturers.

South Florida Considerations

South Florida’s environment is hard on outdoor electronics. Salt air, humidity, and hurricane-season storms affect camera housings, cable runs, and mounting hardware.

IP66 or IP67 rated housings. Required for outdoor cameras. IP66 protects against powerful water jets, IP67 against temporary immersion. For coastal buildings in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Hollywood, IP67 is the better choice.

Corrosion-resistant mounts. Stainless steel mounting hardware resists the rust that standard hardware develops within months in coastal areas.

Lightning protection. South Florida has the highest lightning density in the United States. Camera poles should be grounded, and PoE switches should have surge protection on both the network and power sides. A direct or nearby strike will destroy unprotected equipment.

Wind load on pole-mounted cameras. Cameras mounted on light poles must be rated for the wind loads they will experience. Pole-mounted installations in South Florida should use mounts rated for at least 150 mph wind speeds.
