Condo & Oceanfront Locksmith Highland Beach
Highland Beach is three miles of A1A with the Atlantic on one side and the Intracoastal on the other, and nearly everything on it is a condominium, a beach club, or a waterfront home. That makes the locksmith work here a specialty of its own: unit rekeys between owners and tenants, seasonal residents locked out of a tower they have not seen since April, balcony sliders that will not latch, mailbox locks in a lobby cluster, and common doors that have been eaten by salt. PRO Locksmith is a family-owned, licensed and insured mobile locksmith that has served Palm Beach and Broward counties since 2016, and this page explains what we do for Highland Beach unit owners, boards, managers, and the Bel Lido canal homes. Call (954) 406-8266 for a firm price before we start.
A Town Built Almost Entirely of Condos
Highland Beach is unusual even by South Florida standards. The town covers barely half a square mile of land, has around 4,300 year-round residents, and by most local accounts doubles in population from December through March. It was incorporated in 1949, sits between Boca Raton and Delray Beach, and has almost no commercial district at all. What it has is towers: Toscana, Coronado, Highland Beach Club, Boca Highlands, Villa Magna, Casuarina, Regency Highland, Ambassadors East, Seagate of Highland, and dozens more lined up along South Ocean Boulevard.
For a locksmith, that means the job is rarely a single front door on a single house. It is a unit door in a building with its own rules, a management office that has to sign off, a lobby with fobs and a call box, a garage with a keyed pedestrian door, and a mailbox bank with a hundred small locks. A condo locksmith in Highland Beach has to be comfortable with all of it, and with the salt air that treats every piece of exposed metal as a project.
Unit Rekeys: Between Owners, Tenants, and Seasons
The single most common job we do in Highland Beach is rekeying a unit door. The triggers are always the same: a closing, a new lease, a contractor who had a key for the summer renovation, a cleaning service that changed hands, or a key that simply cannot be accounted for. Rekeying keeps the existing lock and changes the pins inside so the old keys stop working. It costs $40 to $95 per lock, quoted upfront before work starts, and it is far cheaper than replacing hardware that is still in good shape. It is also the job that a condo locksmith in Highland Beach does more than any other, so we carry pins and blanks for every keyway in town.
What is different about a condo rekey versus a house:
- The building may hold a key. Many Highland Beach associations require a copy of every unit key on file for emergencies. If we rekey and you do not update the building’s copy, management is locked out of your unit in a water leak. We will cut the extra key and remind you to drop it at the office.
- Some buildings are on a master system. If the tower’s unit locks are master keyed so staff can enter in an emergency, rekeying has to be done in a way that keeps the master working. We check before we touch the cylinder.
- Fire-rated doors have rules. The unit entry door in a high-rise is typically a rated door. We do not drill it, do not change the hardware to something that breaks the rating, and do not remove the closer.
- One key for everything. Most owners want the entry deadbolt, the entry knob or lever, and any storage locker or cabana door on a single key. That is a keyed-alike job, and we do it on the truck.
We rekey Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and the commercial Sargent and Schlage hardware you find on unit doors in the newer buildings. If your unit has a high-security cylinder, we bring the right pinning kit rather than swapping it for something lesser. More detail is on our lock rekeying page.
Seasonal Resident Lockouts: When the Key Is in Another State
A large share of Highland Beach owners are here from late fall through spring and somewhere else the rest of the year. That schedule produces a very particular lockout. The owner lands in November, drives up A1A, and discovers the unit key is in a drawer in New Jersey, or the lock has been changed by a renter, or the door has swollen and the key will not turn a deadbolt that has not moved since April.
How we handle it:
- We verify you are the owner or an authorized occupant. That means a photo ID and something tying you to the unit. Managers in Highland Beach expect that, and so do we.
- We open the door without damage whenever the lock allows it, which is nearly always. Drilling is a last resort and we tell you before we do it.
- If the lock is seized rather than merely locked, which happens to deadbolts that sit unused through a wet summer, we free it, clean it, and lubricate it, or replace it if it is beyond saving.
- We make you new keys on the spot so the next trip does not start the same way.
A house or condo lockout runs $95 to $445, quoted upfront before work starts, and we dispatch the nearest technician. If it is late, our 24-hour emergency line answers. Our house lockout page covers what to expect in more detail, and the same process applies to a condo unit.
Salt Air and What It Does to Door Hardware Here
Every tower on the east side of A1A takes direct ocean air. The ones on the west side get Intracoastal humidity and, during an east wind, the same salt. The hardware that suffers most is not the unit door inside a conditioned hallway. It is everything else: balcony sliders, the stairwell doors, the pool and beach gates, garage pedestrian doors, the cabana locks, the mailbox cluster near a lobby entrance that stays open to the breeze.
What corrosion looks like when we get the call:
- A lever that droops and will not spring back because the internal spring rusted through.
- A cylinder that takes the key but will not turn, or turns and does not retract the latch, because the tailpiece corroded.
- A deadbolt that throws but will not retract, usually a sign the bolt housing has swelled with rust.
- Pitting and green bloom on brass-plated hardware, which is cosmetic until it is not.
- Sliding door latches that crumble when you push on them. The die-cast metal in a cheap slider latch has almost no life at the beach.
The fix is a matter of material. We install stainless steel and solid brass hardware on exposed doors, with stainless internals and stainless screws, and we choose finishes that are rated for coastal use. A marine-grade lock costs more than a builder-grade one and lasts several times as long within sight of the ocean. When a board asks us to price out the common doors, we always give a coastal-rated option and explain the difference.
Sliding Glass Balcony Doors and Patio Locks
A Highland Beach condo without a balcony slider barely exists. On the ocean side those doors face the weather head-on, and on the Intracoastal side they face the canal and the dock. The lock on a sliding glass door is a small, simple latch, and it fails in small, simple ways: the hook does not reach the keeper, the thumb turn spins freely, the handle breaks off, or the door has dropped in its track so the latch and keeper no longer line up.
We handle all of that as part of our sliding glass and patio door lock service:
- Replacing the mortise latch inside the handle with a stainless unit that matches the door’s backset and hook orientation.
- Replacing the handle set, inside and out, with a keyed or non-keyed version depending on whether the balcony is reachable from a shared terrace.
- Adding a secondary lock: a loop lock, a pin lock, or a security bar that stops the panel from being lifted out of its track. On ground-floor and second-floor units, and on units that open onto a common walkway or pool deck, we recommend one.
- Adjusting or replacing rollers so the door sits square again and the factory latch actually works.
For older buildings where the original hardware has been discontinued, we carry latches in the common sizes and can usually match what is there without replacing the whole handle assembly. If the frame itself is corroded to the point of failure, we say so; that is a glazier’s job and we do not pretend otherwise.
Mailbox Locks in the Lobby Cluster
Nearly every tower in Highland Beach has a cluster mailbox bank in or near the lobby, and nearly every winter someone arrives without the key. Mailbox locks are small cam locks, and they are one of the few locks a locksmith replaces rather than picks in most cases, because the lock is inexpensive and the box is not worth damaging.
What we do: confirm you are the unit owner or authorized occupant, remove the old cam lock, install a new one, and hand you two keys. If the mailbox bank is postal-owned, the carrier’s arrow lock is not ours to touch, but the individual box locks are. If the bank is privately owned by the association, we can keep a record of the lock numbers so management can order replacements in bulk. We can also key a set of mailbox locks to be different from each other but on a management master, which some buildings prefer. See our mailbox lock replacement page for the details.
Building Common Doors: The Board’s Side of the Job
Boards and property managers in Highland Beach call us for the doors that belong to everyone: the lobby, the garage pedestrian doors, stairwells, the trash and recycling rooms, the fitness center, the pool gate, the beach access gate, the dock gate on the Intracoastal side, the storage cages, the roof hatch, and the mechanical rooms. These doors need to be secure, keyed sensibly, and compliant, and they need to survive the salt.
The work we do on common doors:
- Master key systems. A building master for management, sub-masters for maintenance and cleaning, change keys for individual rooms, all charted so the board knows who holds what. We use restricted keyways so copies cannot be made at a kiosk. Our master key system page explains the setup.
- Panic hardware. Stairwell and garage exit doors carry exit devices, and salt kills them. We repair and replace Von Duprin, Sargent, and Detex devices, including alarmed devices on beach and dock gates that management wants closed at night.
- Door closers. Wind pressure in a stairwell or an open garage will defeat a tired closer. LCN and Norton closers sized for the door and the exposure fix a stairwell door that will not latch.
- Keyless entry and fobs. Lobby and garage doors on fobs with a schedule, a mechanical override in case of a power failure after a storm, and a way to delete a credential when a unit sells. We install and service the readers, strikes, and maglocks.
- Gate locks. Pool, beach, and dock gates get marine-grade keyed latches or outdoor-rated keypads, not a residential deadbolt that will be frozen by spring.
We coordinate with the manager so residents are notified and a common door is not left unsecured during the work. For a building that has never had its common hardware looked at as a whole, we can walk the property with the manager and put together a written plan, room by room.
Bel Lido and the Intracoastal Homes
Not all of Highland Beach is towers. Bel Lido Isle, on the west side of A1A along Bel Air Drive, Highland Beach Drive, Intracoastal Drive, and Tranquility Drive, is a neighborhood of canal-front houses and townhomes with docks out back. Ocean Place Estates and Grand Cay Estates are similar. These homes have the locksmith needs of a house, plus a waterfront twist.
For the canal homes we handle:
- Full-house rekeys after a purchase, with every exterior door on one key and the pool cabana and dock storage keyed alike.
- Deadbolt upgrades to Grade 1 hardware on the front and side doors, and high-security cylinders from Medeco or Mul-T-Lock where an owner wants a key that cannot be copied.
- Smart locks and keyless entry on the front door for owners who rent seasonally or have house staff. We install Schlage, Yale, and Kwikset keypad and smart locks and set them up so a code can be added or deleted from a phone in another state. Our smart locks and keyless entry page covers the options.
- Sliding door locks on the waterside sliders, which face the canal and take the same corrosion as an oceanfront balcony.
- Dock gate locks and dock box padlocks in brass or stainless, keyed to the house.
- Garage side door and gate locks, which are the doors most often left with the builder’s original hardware.
What Our Highland Beach Jobs Cost
We quote every job in full before we start and we do not change the number after. The common Highland Beach jobs fall into these ranges:
- Service call and diagnostic: $55, quoted upfront before work starts.
- House or condo lockout: $95 to $445, quoted upfront before work starts.
- Lock rekeying: $40 to $95 per lock, quoted upfront before work starts.
- Lock change: $65 to $345, quoted upfront before work starts.
- Car lockout in a condo garage or on A1A: $95 to $345, quoted upfront before work starts.
- Car key made: from $110, quoted upfront before work starts.
- Business lockout, for the clubs, management offices, and the resort: $95 to $445, quoted upfront before work starts.
Where a job falls in the range depends on the hardware. A Grade 1 stainless deadbolt costs more than a builder-grade one, and a high-security cylinder costs more than a standard one. We show you the options and the prices for each and let you pick. Nothing is added at the end for driving to the coast or for working on a Sunday afternoon.
Why a Mobile Locksmith Suits Highland Beach
There is no locksmith shop in Highland Beach, and there is not likely to be one, since the town has essentially no commercial zoning. A mobile condo locksmith serving Highland Beach is the model that fits. Our technician comes to the tower with a truck that carries cylinders, deadbolts, levers, sliding door latches, mailbox locks, key blanks in the common keyways, and the machines to cut and pin all of it. A rekey, a lockout, a mailbox lock, and a new slider latch can all be done in one visit while you are unpacking.
We also understand how these buildings work. We check in at the desk, we bring ID, we do not prop doors, and we clean up. If management requires a certificate of insurance before a contractor works in the building, we have one ready. If the association has a preferred hardware finish or a rule about what goes on a unit door, we follow it.
Regular hours are during the week and Sunday afternoons, and the 24-hour emergency line is there for the lockouts that do not happen during business hours. The rest of what we do in town, including automotive work, is on the Highland Beach locksmith page.
