High-Security Locksmith Boca Raton: Medeco, Mul-T-Lock & Luxury Homes

High-Security Locksmith Boca Raton: Medeco, Mul-T-Lock & Luxury Homes

This page is for Boca Raton homeowners, estate managers, yacht club members and condo boards who want to know what a high-security lock really is, which ones we install, and what changes on the door once one is in. We are PRO Locksmith, a family-owned, licensed and insured mobile locksmith serving Boca Raton from the barrier island to the communities west of the Turnpike. If you already know you need a high-security locksmith in Boca Raton, call (954) 406-8266 and we will dispatch the nearest technician. If you want to understand the hardware first, keep reading.

Three Words That Get Thrown Around Loosely

“High-security” is printed on a lot of packaging. On this page it means something specific: a cylinder with a patented, restricted keyway so blanks cannot be bought at a kiosk, internal design that resists picking and bumping, and hardened components that resist drilling. Medeco and Mul-T-Lock are the two lines we install most in Boca Raton because they meet all three tests and because we can support them for the life of the door.

The word “restricted” does the most work. A restricted keyway means the key blank is controlled by the manufacturer and sold only to authorized dealers who keep records. To get a copy you present an authorization card or appear on the account we set up for you. The person who borrowed your key for an afternoon cannot walk into a hardware store and come out with a duplicate.

“Bump-resistant” refers to a specific attack where a cut-down key is tapped to bounce the pins above the shear line. Standard pin tumbler locks, including many good-quality ones, are open to it. Medeco’s angled key cuts rotate the pins as well as lift them, so a bump does not line things up. Mul-T-Lock uses a pin-within-a-pin design that a bump key cannot set. Neither is magic, but both take the easiest attacks off the table.

What Medeco Brings to a Boca Raton Front Door

Medeco cylinders fit the deadbolts and handlesets already on most Boca Raton doors. In many cases we can keep the exterior trim you chose to match the house and replace only the cylinder inside it, which matters in a community with architectural review. The key has angled cuts along with depth cuts, and the sidebar inside the cylinder will not release unless every pin is rotated to the correct angle. Hardened steel inserts sit in front of the pins and the sidebar, so a drill bit skates or breaks before it reaches anything useful.

For a home on the water in Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club or along the Intracoastal, we recommend Medeco’s marine-grade options where available, because salt air is hard on plated brass and a sticky high-security cylinder is a high-security cylinder nobody uses. We also recommend the key control program: each home gets its own registered keyway record, and every duplicate requires a signature from the person on file.

What Medeco is not: it is not a smart lock, it is not a door reinforcement, and it does not fix a strike plate held by two half-inch screws. We install it as part of a door package, and we are honest when the door itself is the weak point.

Where Mul-T-Lock Fits, and Where It Beats the Alternative

Mul-T-Lock’s telescoping pin design gives a different kind of resistance and, in our experience, a slightly smoother key action over years of daily use. The keys are dimple-style, thick and flat, which people who carry a lot of keys tend to like. Mul-T-Lock also has a broad range of cylinder formats: standard deadbolt cylinders, mortise cylinders for older mortise locks, padlocks for gates and dock boxes, and cylinders that fit multipoint locks on tall entry doors.

That range is the reason we reach for Mul-T-Lock on estate properties with a mix of hardware. A house in Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club or Woodfield Country Club may have a multipoint front door, a pair of mortise-lock French doors to a courtyard, a padlocked side gate, and a keyed cabinet in the pool house. Mul-T-Lock can put all of them on one restricted key system, with a master for the owners and sub-keys for the house manager and the dock hand. Doing that with mismatched hardware is a headache; doing it in one keyway is clean.

For Boca Raton condominium boards, Mul-T-Lock’s interchangeable-core options make it practical to rekey a lobby or a garage pedestrian door in minutes without pulling the lock, which is the difference between an afternoon of work and a month of “we will get to it.”

Key Control for Estates and Yacht Clubs

Key control is a policy, not a lock. It is the answer to the question “who has a key to this door, and how do we know?” For a single family in a starter home the answer fits on a sticky note. For a waterfront estate with household staff, a boat captain, a property manager, seasonal contractors and adult children who come and go, it does not.

Here is the key control setup we put together for larger Boca Raton properties:

  • One restricted keyway for the property. Every exterior door, the gate, the dock box and the outbuildings sit on the same Medeco or Mul-T-Lock keyway. No outsider can get a blank.
  • A short master key hierarchy. Owners hold a master that opens everything. The house manager holds a key that opens the service doors and the garage but not the owners’ suite or the office. Dock and grounds staff hold a key for the gate, the dock and the equipment rooms. Our master key systems page explains how these levels are built.
  • A written key log. Each key is stamped with a number. The log shows the number, who holds it, when it was issued and when it came back. When a staff member leaves, the log shows exactly what to collect.
  • A duplication record on file with us. Nobody, including us, cuts a copy without the signature of the person named as the authorizer.

Seasonal residents are a special case in Boca Raton, and a common one. If the house sits empty from May through November, the people going in and out during that stretch are the ones you hired to watch it: a home watch service, a pool company, a landscaper, a hurricane shutter crew. Each of them needs a way in, and each of them is a business with its own staff turnover. A restricted keyway lets you hand each vendor one numbered key, know that it cannot be copied, and collect or kill it when the contract ends. Before you head north for the summer is the right time to set this up, and we schedule a good number of these walkthroughs in April.

Yacht clubs and marinas in Boca Raton have a version of the same problem with more moving parts: members, dock staff, fuel dock attendants, contractors working on boats, and delivery drivers. A restricted keyway on the gate, the dockmaster’s office and the storage lockers, plus a key log at the front desk, cuts the number of loose keys in circulation dramatically. Where a club wants time-of-day control on the docks, we pair the mechanical key system with access control readers on the main gates so member fobs work during set hours and the physical key remains for staff and emergencies.

Downtown Condos and the Mizner Park Corridor

Downtown Boca Raton has densified quickly. The condominium towers around Mizner Park, Royal Palm Place and along Federal Highway and Palmetto Park Road all share a pattern: a manned lobby or a fob reader at street level, then hundreds of individual unit doors upstairs that were keyed by the developer years ago. The building’s front door gets attention. The unit doors generally do not.

A high-security locksmith in Boca Raton looks at those unit doors differently. The original cylinders are usually a common keyway, and the building often holds a master that opens every unit for emergencies. That master arrangement is reasonable and required by many associations, but it means the security of your unit depends on how well the building has controlled its master key over a decade of staff turnover. For an owner, the cleanest fix is a Medeco or Mul-T-Lock cylinder on the unit door, set up so the building’s emergency access still works through a properly documented override rather than a master key that floats around the management office.

We coordinate with condo managers on this. Most Boca Raton associations permit high-security cylinders on unit doors as long as the association retains emergency access, and we document the arrangement in writing so nobody is arguing about it during a water leak at two in the morning. Our high-security locks page covers the cylinder options for condo doors in more detail.

Boca West, Broken Sound and the Country Club Communities

The country club communities west of I-95, Boca West off Glades Road, Broken Sound off Yamato Road, Boca Pointe, Woodfield, and the others, put a guardhouse between the public road and your driveway. Many owners take that as the whole security answer. It is a good first layer. It is not the last one.

Inside those gates the doors are opened by housekeepers, caterers, decorators, pool companies, pet sitters and seasonal guests, most of whom were given a key at some point. A standard key, once given, is outside your control. The guardhouse cannot help with that. A restricted keyway puts the control back with the owner: the housekeeper has a key, the housekeeper cannot copy it, and when the housekeeper changes, one cylinder gets repinned and the old key is dead.

These communities also have a lot of villas and attached homes with shared walls and standardized hardware. Boca West alone has dozens of separate villages with their own hardware conventions. We match the existing trim and finish so the exterior looks the way the community’s architectural standards require, and we change only what is inside the door. If your community requires notice before exterior work, we can provide a hardware spec sheet for the board.

Safes for Jewelry, Documents and the Boat Papers

High-security cylinders protect the door. A safe protects what matters when the door fails, or when the risk is inside the house rather than outside it. In Boca Raton we install safes for three common reasons: jewelry and watches, firearms, and paper that is painful to replace, including passports, vessel documentation, titles and estate paperwork.

A few things we tell every Boca Raton client about safes:

  • Bolt it down. A safe that is not anchored to the slab is a box with a handle. We anchor into concrete, not tile, and we know how to do it in a home with radiant floors or post-tension slabs where drilling is restricted.
  • Hide it, then secure it. The closet floor, a built-in in the master suite, the pantry behind a false back. A safe nobody knows about is the best kind.
  • Match the lock to the user. Electronic keypads are convenient and fine for most households. Mechanical dials never need batteries and never lose a code, which some clients prefer. Either can be serviced.
  • Fire rating is a separate question from burglary rating. A safe that holds paper safely through a fire is built differently from one that resists a pry bar. Decide what you are protecting from before you decide on a model.

We open safes too, when the code is forgotten, the battery died with the door locked, or a safe came with the house and nobody has the combination. Most openings leave the safe usable afterward. See safe opening and installation for what to expect on a service call.

Reinforcing the Door Itself

The most frustrating call we take is a homeowner who bought a top-line cylinder and then had the door kicked open, because the cylinder was never the weakness. High-security work in Boca Raton includes the parts of the door that nobody photographs:

  • A heavy-duty strike plate with three-inch screws into the framing, or a full-length strike reinforcement on double doors.
  • A wrap-around door reinforcer on wood doors that have been drilled and redrilled by previous hardware.
  • Flush bolts on the inactive leaf of a double door that actually engage, top and bottom.
  • Hinge-side security: non-removable pin hinges or security studs on any exterior door that swings out, which is common on Boca Raton homes because of wind code.
  • Laminated or impact glass in sidelites, or a double-cylinder deadbolt where the sidelite is within reach of the thumbturn, subject to your comfort with egress.

We assess all of this on the first visit, with a written list of what we would change and what we would leave alone. A deadbolt installation or repair is often the cheapest single upgrade on that list, and we say so.

What a High-Security Locksmith Visit in Boca Raton Looks Like

The sequence is the same for a two-bedroom condo and a ten-thousand-square-foot estate; only the scale changes.

  • Walkthrough. We look at every exterior door, gate and sliding door, note the hardware brand and condition, and ask who holds keys today.
  • Plan. We propose a keyway, a key hierarchy if you need one, and a list of doors to reinforce. You get one firm price for the whole scope, quoted upfront before work starts.
  • Install. Cylinders go in, keys are cut on the truck, strikes and reinforcers are fitted, and every door is tested from both sides.
  • Documentation. You receive the key log, the authorization card for duplicates, and a record of what was installed where. We keep a copy so future service is fast.

Lock change pricing runs $65 to $345 depending on the hardware, and the service call and diagnostic is $55, quoted upfront before work starts. High-security cylinders sit at the upper part of that range because of the cost of the hardware itself, and we will show you the difference in price between a standard cylinder and a restricted one for each door so you can decide where the upgrade earns its keep.
