A safe is supposed to be the one thing in the house nobody but you can get into — which is exactly the problem when the combination slips your mind, a dial stops turning, or a battery dies on an electronic lock at the worst possible time. It happens more often than people admit, and most of the time it’s fixable without replacing the safe.
Before you assume it’s broken
- Electronic keypad safes — a dead or dying battery is the single most common cause of a “broken” electronic lock. Try a fresh battery, inserted correctly, before assuming the lock itself has failed.
- Dial combination safes — make sure you’re accounting for the direction and number of rotations correctly; a combination entered fast or in the wrong pattern will fail even if every number is right.
- Sticking or hard-to-turn handle — sometimes it’s not the lock at all, it’s a bolt that’s binding. Forcing it can make the actual fix more expensive.
If none of that works
This is where it becomes a locksmith job rather than a guessing game. Opening a locked safe without the combination or a working key is a specialized skill — it’s not the same tool set as a door lockout, and it’s not something to hand to just anyone with a drill. A tech experienced with safes can typically get it open with minimal to no damage to the safe itself, and reset or replace the lock afterward so you’re not locked out again.

The make and model (or a photo of the safe and its lock/dial), whether it’s a residential or a gun safe, and whether the lock is mechanical (dial) or electronic (keypad). That’s usually enough to know what to bring.
One thing to have ready
Proof that the safe is yours — ownership of the property, a receipt, or something similar. It’s a reasonable thing for a locksmith to ask before opening a locked safe, and a company that doesn’t ask is one to be cautious of.
