Residential Locksmith Royal Palm Beach: Family Homes & Garages
Royal Palm Beach is a village of family houses: ranch homes from the 1970s and 1980s in La Mancha and Counterpoint Estates, golf-course lots in Madison Green, gated streets in Saratoga, and acre-plus properties on the western edge where the village gives way to Loxahatchee and The Acreage. PRO Locksmith is a family-owned, licensed and insured mobile residential locksmith serving Royal Palm Beach and the rest of Palm Beach and Broward counties, and this page explains what we do for homeowners here: rekeys, deadbolts, garage side doors, sliding doors, smart locks, lockouts, and gate locks. Locked out or need a lock fixed today? Call (954) 406-8266.
The Doors on a Royal Palm Beach House, and What Each One Needs
Most of the homes we service in the village have the same five or six openings, and each has its own failure pattern. Walk the outside of your house and count them.
- Front entry. Usually a knob or lever plus a deadbolt. On the older Colony-era homes and in La Mancha the original hardware is often still on the door, forty years on.
- Garage side door. The walk-through door from the yard into the garage. Cheap hardware, rarely upgraded, and it leads straight to your cars and the unlocked door into the kitchen.
- Door from garage to house. Frequently no deadbolt at all, or one that nobody ever turns.
- Sliding glass door to the patio or pool. A latch that was flimsy when new and a track full of grit.
- Laundry or utility door. Sometimes a second walk-through at the side of the house, usually the weakest lock on the property.
- Gate. On the acreage lots, a driveway gate; on in-town lots, a pool fence gate that has to self-latch.
A residential locksmith Royal Palm Beach homeowners actually benefit from is one who looks at all of those, not just the door you called about. We do, and we will tell you which ones are fine and which ones are the problem.
Rekeying When You Move In or Hand Out Too Many Keys
Rekeying means changing the pins inside your existing locks so the old keys stop working and a new key works. The hardware stays; only the combination changes. It costs $40 to $95 per lock, quoted upfront before work starts, and it is the single best value in residential security.
Three situations call for it in Royal Palm Beach nearly every week:
- You just bought the house. The prior owner, their kids, the pool company, the pet sitter, the contractor who did the roof, and the real estate lockbox all had keys. Nobody knows how many copies exist. Rekey on closing day.
- A key went missing. A teenager lost a ring at Commons Park, a purse was taken at the grocery store, or a housekeeper stopped showing up and never returned the spare.
- You have four different keys for four doors. Most Kwikset and Schlage locks around the house can be keyed alike so one key opens the front door, the garage side door, and the laundry door.
We rekey in the driveway, in one visit, and hand you as many copies of the new key as you want cut on the spot. If a lock is too worn to rekey we will say so before we start and show you why. Our lock rekey page has more.
Keyed Alike, or Keyed Separately?
Most families want one key for everything, and for the front door, garage side door, and laundry door that is the right call. There are two exceptions worth thinking about. If you rent out a room, an in-law suite, or the detached workshop, keep that door on its own key so the tenant’s key does not open your house. And if a housekeeper or caregiver needs regular access, consider giving them a key to one door only, or better, a keypad code you can delete later. We can set all of that up in the same visit as the rekey.
One more detail: Kwikset and Schlage use different keyways, so a house with a mix of both cannot be keyed alike without swapping cylinders. We carry both, and we will tell you the cheapest way to get down to one key before we touch anything.
Deadbolts That Match the Door
A deadbolt only works if the bolt goes a full inch into a strike plate that is screwed into the framing, not just the trim. On a lot of the wood-frame and block homes in Counterpoint Estates and Crestwood, the strike plate is held in by two short screws into the jamb and nothing else. The lock is fine; the frame gives up.
When we install or repair a deadbolt we:
- Replace the strike plate screws with three-inch screws that reach the stud
- Check that the bolt throws fully without rubbing, which is a common problem on doors that have swelled in the humidity
- Recommend a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt from Schlage, Kwikset, or Yale depending on the door and your budget
- Put a deadbolt on the door from the garage into the house if there is not one already
A lock change runs $65 to $345, quoted upfront before work starts; the spread depends on whether you want a basic deadbolt or something heavier. For homeowners who want a key that cannot be copied at a kiosk, we also install Medeco and Mul-T-Lock cylinders. See deadbolt install and repair for what to expect.
The Garage Side Door Problem
Ask us which door on a Royal Palm Beach house we would fix first and the answer is almost always the garage side door. It is out of sight from the street, it is usually a hollow or thin door with a builder-grade knob, and once someone is in the garage they can work on the interior door in privacy.
The fix is not expensive. A solid deadbolt with a reinforced strike, a knob or lever that actually latches, and a strike plate screwed into framing brings this door up to the standard of the front entry. If the door itself is rotted at the bottom from years of sprinkler spray, which is common on the older lots, we will tell you it needs a door before it needs a lock.
The same logic applies to the door between the garage and the kitchen. Many families leave it unlocked because the garage door is down. Put a deadbolt on it and turn it at night. If you keep a keypad on the overhead garage door, change the code when a contractor or a former housekeeper knew it.
Sliding Glass Doors to the Patio and Pool
Almost every house in the village has at least one slider, and most have two or three. The stock latch on a slider is a small hook that engages a keeper on the frame, and both wear. When the latch no longer catches, the usual “fix” is a broomstick in the track. It works, until someone forgets it.
What we do with sliders in Royal Palm Beach:
- Replace worn latches and keepers so the door locks again without lifting or jiggling
- Add a secondary keyed lock or a pin lock at the top or bottom of the door so it cannot be lifted out of the track or slid open from outside
- Replace rollers and clean the track so the door glides again, which also stops the slamming that breaks latches in the first place
- Install a security bar that folds up out of the way when you want the door open
Our sliding glass and patio door locks page covers the options. If the door is dragging and the frame is bent, our sliding glass door repair service handles the rollers and track work in the same visit.
Smart Locks and Keypads for Busy Households
Families in Madison Green and Saratoga ask about smart locks more than any other upgrade, and for good reason. Kids get home from H.L. Johnson or Crestwood Middle before parents do, the dog walker comes at noon, and the grandparents visit on weekends. A keypad means nobody hides a key under the mat.
We install keypad and smart deadbolts from Schlage, Kwikset, and Yale. The differences that matter in practice:
- Keypad only. No app, no Wi-Fi, codes set at the door. Simple and dependable, and it survives an internet outage without a thought.
- App-connected. Codes managed from a phone, scheduled codes for the cleaner, a log of who came in. Needs Wi-Fi or a hub, and needs someone in the house who will change the batteries.
- Keyed override. We recommend a model that still takes a physical key. Batteries die on the worst possible day.
One thing to check before you buy: many of the older doors in La Mancha and Counterpoint Estates have a bore that is not centered or a backset that is not standard, and some smart locks will not fit without work on the door. We measure first. Details are on our smart locks and keyless entry page.
House Lockouts, Day or Night
Lockouts in a family neighborhood happen in predictable ways. The door with the button lock got pulled shut with the keys inside. The toddler locked the bathroom. The spare key that was supposed to be with the neighbor moved with the neighbor. The keypad battery died and nobody remembered where the backup key was.
Our 24-hour emergency line is (954) 406-8266. We dispatch the nearest technician, confirm you live at the address, and open the door without damage in the large majority of cases. A house lockout runs $95 to $445, quoted upfront before work starts, and the price you hear on the phone is the price on the invoice. If a key broke off in the cylinder we extract it and cut a new one at the truck. Our house lockout page explains what we need from you when you call.
During regular hours during the week and Sunday afternoons the same number books scheduled work.
Acreage Estates and Driveway Gates on the Western Edge
The 33470 side of our coverage, out toward Loxahatchee and The Acreage, is a different kind of homeownership. Lots run an acre or more, houses sit well back from the road, and the first line of security is the driveway gate. Many of those gates are swing or slide gates with a keypad or remote operator, and many of the older ones are simply chained.
What we handle on acreage properties:
- Keyed gate locks and heavy-duty padlock hasps for manual gates
- Repairs to gate latches, hinges, and post hardware that have rusted or been hit by a trailer
- Welding repairs on bent or broken gate frames
- Keypad and remote-controlled access on operated gates, including changing codes after a contractor project
- Locks for barns, workshops, sheds, and equipment buildings, keyed to the house key where that makes sense
Out here the house can be a long way from the road, and a technician who arrives without the right gate part has wasted your afternoon. Tell us what kind of gate you have when you call and we will load the truck accordingly. Our gate repair, welding, and locks page describes the work in detail.
Mailboxes, Sheds, and the Locks People Forget
Several of the newer communities in the village use cluster mailboxes rather than a box at the curb. When the key to your slot goes missing, the carrier cannot help; the box lock is the homeowner’s responsibility. We replace cluster box locks and cut new keys in one visit, and we bring the common cluster box lock sizes with us so there is no second trip.
Sheds, pool equipment enclosures, and detached workshops usually carry a padlock that has seized in the humidity. We cut them off and replace them, and if you like we key the new one to match your house key so there is one less thing on the ring.
Pool fence gates deserve a mention too. Florida requires a self-closing, self-latching gate on a residential pool barrier, and the spring hinges and latches on those gates rust out in a few seasons of sprinkler spray and sun. If yours no longer swings shut and clicks on its own, we can replace the hinges and latch in the same visit as any other work at the house.
What a Visit Looks Like
You call, we ask a few questions about the door and the hardware, and we give you a firm price for the finished job. The service call and diagnostic is $55, quoted upfront before work starts, and it is applied toward the work if you go ahead. The technician arrives in a stocked van, does the job in the driveway, tests every lock with you, and hands you the keys and the invoice at the number you approved.
We do not have a shop in Royal Palm Beach or anywhere else; we are mobile by design so the work happens at your door. We are a family business, licensed and insured, based in South Florida since 2016, and the person who answers the phone is the same team that shows up.
A few things that make the visit go faster:
- Have your ID handy for a lockout; we confirm you belong at the address before we open a door
- Know the brand stamped on your existing keys or locks, or send a photo when you call
- Tell us if a door is swollen, dragging, or hard to close, since that is usually a door problem disguised as a lock problem
- Count the doors you want on the same key so we can quote the whole job at once
- For gated communities in Madison Green, Saratoga, or Victoria Grove, let the gatehouse know a locksmith is expected
