A camera system only matters when you need the footage. Most business owners never look at their camera feed until something happens — a break-in, a slip-and-fall claim, a cash drawer that comes up short. At that point, the only thing that matters is whether the system actually captured usable footage.
Usable footage depends on decisions made before installation: camera type, placement, storage method, and a handful of technical settings. Get those wrong and you end up with hours of video that shows nothing useful.
Camera Types and Where They Belong
Not every camera fits every location. Four types cover most commercial needs.
Dome cameras mount on ceilings. The dome housing is vandal-resistant and hides which direction the lens is pointed, which discourages tampering. These work well in retail interiors, lobbies, and hallways where the camera needs to blend in.
Bullet cameras mount on walls and have a longer effective range than domes. Their shape makes the viewing direction obvious, which itself deters some incidents. Bullets are the standard choice for parking lots, building exteriors, and loading docks where you need to see farther down a line of sight.
PTZ cameras (pan-tilt-zoom) move. Someone monitoring the feed live can steer the camera and zoom in on activity in real time. PTZ makes sense where active monitoring happens — a security desk, a large parking structure, a property with a dedicated monitoring contract. Without a live monitor, a PTZ camera just sits pointed in one direction like a fixed camera, so it isn’t worth the added cost for most small commercial sites.
Turret cameras are a newer form factor — a ball-and-socket design mounted on a small base. Their main advantage is optical: the lens sits at an angle from the infrared illuminators, so there’s less IR reflection and glare compared to a standard dome. This matters for night footage where a dome’s IR array can wash out the image with reflected light off the housing itself. Turrets are a good fit anywhere night image clarity matters — entrances, cash areas, and exterior doors.
Coverage Planning: Where Blind Spots Become Liabilities
Cameras don’t need to cover every square foot of a property. They need to cover the points that matter for security and liability.
Priority areas for commercial coverage:
- Entry and exit points. Every door someone can walk through, recorded from an angle that captures the face, not just the top of the head.
- Parking perimeters. Vehicle break-ins and thefts overwhelmingly happen in parking areas. Wide-angle bullet coverage along the perimeter, plus focused coverage on entrances.
- Loading docks. High-value inventory moves through docks, and dock areas see the most contractor and vendor traffic of any part of a commercial property.
- Cash registers and points of sale. Angled to capture the transaction and the person, not just the register drawer.
- Common areas. Hallways, elevator lobbies, and shared entrances in multi-tenant buildings.
A blind spot isn’t just a gap in footage — it’s a liability. If an incident happens in an uncovered corner of a parking lot, the property owner has no record and no defense if a claim is filed. Coverage planning should start from “where could something happen that we’d need to prove or disprove,” not from “how many cameras can we afford.”
NVR vs. Cloud Storage
Recorded footage has to live somewhere. Commercial systems generally use one of two approaches, or a combination of both.
NVR (Network Video Recorder) stores footage on a physical device on site — typically a locked closet or server room. There’s no monthly subscription fee for storage, and the business retains full control over the footage and who can access it. The tradeoff is that if the NVR itself is stolen or destroyed in the same incident being recorded, the footage goes with it.
Cloud storage sends footage off-site to a remote server, usually for a monthly fee tied to the number of cameras and the retention period. Because the footage isn’t physically on the premises, it can’t be destroyed or stolen along with the equipment. The tradeoff is the recurring cost and dependence on internet bandwidth for upload.
Most commercial setups in practice use an NVR as the primary recorder, with cloud backup as a secondary copy. That gives the business full local control and a fast local playback experience, plus a remote copy that survives a break-in or fire.
What Actually Matters for Evidence Quality
A camera system that “has cameras” isn’t the same as a camera system that produces usable evidence. Four factors determine whether footage actually helps after an incident.
Resolution. For general coverage, standard HD is workable. For anything where you need to identify a face or read a license plate — entrances, parking lot exits — 4K resolution is the minimum. Lower resolution footage of a license plate is frequently just a blur when zoomed in, which makes it useless to police or insurance.
Frame rate. 15–30 frames per second is standard for commercial recording. Lower than that and fast motion — someone running, a vehicle passing — turns choppy or blurs between frames, losing the exact sequence of events.
Lighting. Two lighting problems come up constantly. At night, cameras need infrared (IR) illumination to produce a usable image instead of black. During the day, backlit entrances — a door with bright exterior light behind a person walking in — need wide dynamic range (WDR) processing, or the person’s face turns into a silhouette. Both need to be planned for at the specific location, not assumed.
Retention period. How long footage is kept before it’s overwritten. 30 to 90 days is standard for commercial systems. Shorter retention risks losing footage before an incident is even reported — a customer might not report a theft or a fall for a week or two. Retention period is mostly a function of storage capacity, so it should be set deliberately, not left at a default.
Wiring and Power
Modern IP cameras run on Cat6 cabling, the same category of cable used for network data. Older analog camera systems use Siamese cable, which combines a coaxial video line and a power line in one jacket.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) simplifies IP camera installation significantly — a single Cat6 cable carries both the data and the power to the camera, so there’s no separate electrical run required to each camera location. This is the standard approach for new commercial installations because it cuts the amount of cabling and electrical work roughly in half.
Permitting

Privacy and Signage
Cameras covering common areas — parking lots, hallways, lobbies, sales floors — are standard and legal. Cameras covering private spaces — restrooms, changing rooms, private offices where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy — are not, and installing them there can create legal exposure regardless of intent.
Posting a visible notice that recording is in progress is best practice for transparency and liability reduction.
Camera Installation as Part of Access Control
A camera system works best when it’s planned alongside the property’s door hardware and access control — the same door schedule that determines where card readers and electrified locks go also determines where cameras need to cover entry points. Common Mistakes on Commercial Installs
A few mistakes show up repeatedly on commercial camera projects that were installed without a coverage plan. The most common is aiming cameras at the ground or at a wall instead of at head height where a face is actually visible — a camera technically “covering” an entrance that only ever captures the tops of heads isn’t useful for identification. Another is placing a single camera to cover two areas that both matter, like an entrance and a cash register on opposite sides of a room, which usually means neither is captured well enough to be useful. A third is skipping a camera at a secondary or rear entrance because it sees less traffic, which overlooks that rear doors are exactly where a break-in is more likely to happen unobserved.
Maintenance After Installation
A camera system isn’t a one-time install and forget. Lenses collect dust and salt residue in South Florida’s coastal air, which degrades image clarity over time if never cleaned. Storage drives fill up and need monitoring, particularly on NVR systems where retention settings determine how much footage gets kept before older recordings are overwritten. And firmware on IP cameras and NVRs occasionally needs updating to patch security vulnerabilities, since a camera system connected to a network is itself a potential entry point if left unpatched. None of this is complicated, but it’s easy to ignore until the day the footage is actually needed and it turns out a drive failed months earlier without anyone noticing.
Matching the System to the Property, Not a Generic Package
The biggest difference between a camera system that produces useful evidence and one that doesn’t usually isn’t the brand of camera or the price paid per unit. It’s whether someone actually walked the property, identified where incidents are likely to happen or liability is highest, and placed cameras deliberately around those points — rather than installing a fixed number of cameras spaced evenly around a building because that’s what came in a package. A four-camera system aimed at the right four locations outperforms an eight-camera system aimed at whatever was convenient to mount.

What a Commercial Camera System Does
A commercial security camera system serves three functions: deterrence, documentation, and investigation. The presence of visible cameras deters opportunistic crime. If an incident occurs, recorded footage documents what happened, when, and who was involved. For a property manager or building owner, this documentation is the difference between a resolved incident and an unresolved liability claim.
A camera system is not a substitute for physical security — locks, access control, and lighting. It is a complement. Cameras record what happens. Locks and access control prevent unauthorized entry. A building that relies on cameras alone has observation without prevention. A building that combines both has a layered security posture.
Storage and Retention
Recorded footage must be stored for a specific period. There is no single federal retention requirement for private security camera footage, but industry practice is 30 days minimum. Some jurisdictions and some insurance policies require longer retention — 60 or 90 days — for commercial properties.
Storage is calculated from four variables: the number of cameras, the resolution of each, the frame rate (typically 15 fps for commercial use and 30 fps where high detail is needed), and the compression codec. H.265 is the current standard and uses roughly half the storage of H.264 at equivalent quality.
For a 16-camera system at 4MP, 15 fps, H.265 compression, 30-day retention typically requires 4 to 8 terabytes of storage. This is stored on a network video recorder (NVR) — a dedicated device with hard drives designed for continuous writing. Consumer-grade hard drives are not rated for continuous recording. Surveillance-rated drives such as WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk are engineered for constant write cycles.
Cloud storage is an option for smaller installations but becomes expensive at scale. A hybrid approach — local NVR for primary storage with cloud backup of flagged events — balances cost with redundancy.
Power and Network Infrastructure
Modern IP camera systems use Power over Ethernet (PoE) — a single Ethernet cable carries both data and power to the camera. This simplifies installation because only one cable run is needed per camera. PoE switches or PoE injectors provide the power. NEC Article 725 covers Class 2 and Class 3 power sources, which include PoE.
For outdoor cameras in South Florida, the cable runs must be in conduit — not exposed cable. South Florida’s UV exposure degrades cable jackets within a year, and conduit also protects against physical damage. Underground runs require PVC conduit with sealed penetrations to prevent water intrusion from the high water table.
Network infrastructure matters for system reliability. A 16-camera system at 4MP generates significant network traffic. The network switch must have adequate throughput, and the NVR must be connected to the network via a gigabit connection. Wireless cameras are available but are less reliable than wired connections, particularly in South Florida where thunderstorms and heavy rain can disrupt wireless signals.
South Florida Considerations
South Florida’s environment is hard on outdoor electronics. Salt air, humidity, and hurricane-season storms affect camera housings, cable runs, and mounting hardware.
IP66 or IP67 rated housings. Required for outdoor cameras. IP66 protects against powerful water jets, IP67 against temporary immersion. For coastal buildings in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach and Hollywood, IP67 is the better choice.
Corrosion-resistant mounts. Stainless steel mounting hardware resists the rust that standard hardware develops within months in coastal areas.
Lightning protection. South Florida has the highest lightning density in the United States. Camera poles should be grounded, and PoE switches should have surge protection on both the network and power sides. A direct or nearby strike will destroy unprotected equipment.
Wind load on pole-mounted cameras. Cameras mounted on light poles must be rated for the wind loads they will experience. Pole-mounted installations in South Florida should use mounts rated for at least 150 mph wind speeds.
