What a smart lock actually changes
A smart lock changes how a door is operated. It does not, on its own, change how strong the door is. That distinction is the whole of an honest conversation about keyless entry, and almost every disappointed customer bought a lock without having it.
What keyless entry is good at is credential management. Keys get copied, lent, lost and never returned, and the only way to withdraw one is to change the lock. A code can be added or removed in seconds, given to one person and not another, and limited to certain times. For a household with cleaners, contractors and relatives coming and going, that is a real improvement.
What it is not is a substitute for a sound door: the same bolt goes into the same jamb, and if that assembly was weak with a key, it is weak with an app.
Keypad-only versus connected
Two different products are sold under the same heading. A keypad-only lock is self-contained: codes are programmed at the lock, there is no network connection, and it works whether or not anything else does. A connected lock adds a radio — Wi-Fi, or a low-power protocol talking to a hub — so it can be operated remotely, integrated with other systems and made to report activity.
The honest guidance is that many households buy connected and use it as keypad-only. If nobody will manage access remotely, the network features are complexity and battery drain bought for nothing. If the point is a rental, keypad-only will frustrate you. Decide which you are before choosing hardware.
Power cuts, network outages and batteries
A power cut is usually not a problem. Residential smart locks run on their own batteries, not house current, so when the power goes out the lock keeps working. What stops is anything depending on your router — remote operation, notifications, and in some designs changing a code from the app. In South Florida, where outages arrive with weather, the door still opens; the phone app may not.
A Wi-Fi outage is the same story. The lock works from the keypad and from codes already stored on it — a good reason to keep one working code known to the whole household.
Batteries are the real maintenance item. Life varies enormously with the product and how hard the motor works, so we will not quote a figure. A lock fighting a misaligned strike drains batteries far faster than one that throws cleanly, and low-battery warnings should be acted on, because they begin well before the lock stops. Most units provide an emergency power contact so a flat lock can be energised from outside — worth knowing where yours is.
The mechanical key override
Many smart deadbolts retain a keyway; some deliberately do not, and both positions are defensible.
Keeping a keyway means there is always a way in that does not depend on electronics, which is what most households should choose. It also means the door’s security includes that cylinder, and on some smart locks the supplied cylinder is not the strongest part of the product. Where a keyway is kept, it is worth keying it to the rest of the house so the backup key is one you already carry — straightforward lock rekey work.
Removing the keyway removes that cylinder as a consideration, at the cost of no mechanical way in. That suits a door which is not the only entrance, and is a poor choice for the sole entry to a home with elderly residents or young children.
The lock is only as strong as the bolt, strike and jamb
A smart deadbolt is a motor, a keypad and a board attached to a bolt, and that bolt still projects into a strike plate screwed into a jamb. On many houses the jamb is softwood, the strike a thin plate held by short screws, and the pocket shallow. Forced entry there does not defeat the lock — it splits the jamb and takes the strike with it, and what the lock was capable of makes no difference.
The improvements that change the outcome are unglamorous: a strike with a reinforced box, long screws reaching the framing behind the jamb rather than stopping in trim, a bolt that fully extends into a properly cut pocket, and a frame that is not rotten. Hinge screws into framing matter for the same reason.
We say so during a survey when a customer proposes to put considerable hardware on a door that will fail somewhere else. Assembly first, keyless entry second, is the order we apply on any residential locksmith job.
Retrofit units, full replacements and door prep
A retrofit unit replaces only the interior thumb-turn of an existing deadbolt and motorises it, leaving the exterior cylinder and bolt alone. It is quick, it keeps your existing key, and it suits a sound door whose owner wants remote control rather than a keypad — but it cannot improve the lock. A full replacement swaps the whole deadbolt for one with a keypad outside, which is what code entry requires.
Fit is where these projects go wrong. The dimensions worth checking first are these.
- Backset — the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore. Two standards are common and many locks ship adjustable, but not all.
- Bore diameter — the main hole through the face, plus the cross bore in the edge.
- Door thickness — most locks cover a standard range; thick slabs and some rated doors need a specific kit.
- Interior clearance — retrofit units are bulky and can foul a storm door or deep trim.
- Metal and fibreglass doors — reworking prep is not the same job as on a wood slab, and on a rated door must not be improvised.
Where the bore does not match, the answer is proper door prep with the right tooling. A ragged bore leaves a lock that is not square to the strike, and that grinds through batteries and stops latching.
Rentals, guest codes and audit trails
Keyless entry earns its keep in property that turns over. For a long-term rental, a code changed between tenancies ends the problem of uncollected keys and unknown copies. For short-term rentals, a per-booking code that begins at check-in and expires at check-out means no key handover, no lockbox advertising the property, and no guest retaining access afterwards. The same applies to a cleaner or a contractor whose code stops when the job ends.
Audit trails are the feature most oversold. A connected lock records that a credential operated it at a given time, which helps narrow down what happened. It is not proof of who was present, because codes are shared and phones lent, and it records only the lock — a door left on the latch produces no entry. Treat the log as information, not evidence.
Where several doors, several buildings or staff credentials are involved, the answer is often not consumer smart locks but proper access control, built to manage many people across many openings without depending on each door’s batteries.
Humidity, sun and keypad wear
Humidity here is constant, and it finds its way into any enclosure that is not properly sealed. Corrosion on battery contacts and connections is the common failure, showing up as intermittent behaviour long before the lock dies — a keypad that ignores a press, a motor that hesitates. A door with an overhang gets more service than one facing open weather, and where there is no shelter a weather shroud is worth having.
Sun is the other factor. Ultraviolet exposure and heat degrade coatings and plastics, and a keypad in full afternoon sun will fade and craze. Touch surfaces wear exactly where the digits of a long-standing code are pressed — a quiet security problem, and a reason to change codes periodically. Salt air attacks exposed metal finishes on top of that.
So treat exterior keyless hardware as a replaceable component rather than a lifetime fitting, and keep the mechanical side of the door — bolt, strike, jamb, hinges — in the condition that will still be protecting the house when the electronics are on their second generation.
